Dirt Don’t Hurt: 5 Ways To Turn Nature Into A Learning Playground

Dirt Don’t Hurt: 5 Ways To Turn Nature Into A Learning Playground

At Open Minds, we believe the best classroom has sunshine, breeze, and maybe a bug or two! Springtime is the perfect invitation to take learning outside and we want your little explorers to soak it all in!

Nature can fuel imagination and development in the most playful ways. Here are some down-to-earth activities you can explore with your little ones this season:

1.) Leaf & Flower Soup

Give kids a bucket or bowl of water, and let them mix in leaves, petals, pinecones, grass or whatever they find! Add a few spoons or ladles for full sensory chef vibes.

Skills:

  • Sensory exploration: textures, smells, and colors

  • Imaginative play & language development: storytelling about their recipes

  • Fine motor skills: scooping, pouring, stirring

2.) Nature Color Match

Collect paint swatches or make simple color cards. Kids search for natural items (flowers, leaves, rocks) that match each color.

Skills:

  • Color recognition & sorting

  • Observation & visual discrimination skills

  • Critical thinking: deciding what counts as a “match” and why

3.) Animal Tracks Adventure

Bring clay or Play-Doh outside and press in animal tracks, rocks, leaves, or twigs. Talk about texture, patterns, and who might’ve walked by!

Skills:

  • Early science: animal habitats, movement, and patterns

  • Problem-solving & prediction: “Which animal made this track?”

  • Gross motor skills: active exploration in nature

  • Texture Awareness

*Pro tip: Mud makes everything more exciting.

4.) Stick Letters & Nature Names

Gather sticks and create letters from the alphabet—or spell out their names! Kids can decorate them with found items like petals or feathers.

Skills:

  • Letter recognition & name literacy

  • Spatial awareness & shape creation

  • Collaboration

5.) Rock Buddies

Kids find a rock, give it a name, paint it, and build a story around it! Add googly eyes if desired for extra personality.

Skills:

  • Creativity & emotional expression

  • Responsibility & nurturing behavior

  • Story-telling

  • Artistic exploration: painting and decorating with care
